Should I Post My Full Resume on LinkedIn?

katyallen64

I’ve been seeing more and more people posting a full copy of their resume on LinkedIn—either directly on their profile or as a post to share with their network.

I completely understand the desire to do this. When you’re job searching, it’s natural to want to make it as easy as possible for recruiters and hiring managers to find you. And LinkedIn is a great place to build connections and opportunities!

However, I don’t typically recommend posting your full resume, and here’s why:

1. Protect Yourself from Identity Theft

It’s unfortunate, but it happens—people steal. If your full resume is publicly available, someone could download it and pretend to be you. Yes, they could technically pull details from your LinkedIn profile anyway, but having a full resume makes it that much easier.

2. Stay in Control of Your Job Search

Most recruiters are wonderful, ethical professionals. But if your resume is easily accessible, a recruiter could submit it for a role without checking with you first. This limits your ability to tailor your resume or follow up directly and could create confusion if multiple recruiters submit your resume for the same job.

3. Keep Your Resume Tailored for Each Role

A strong resume should highlight the experience, skills, and accomplishments that are most relevant to the job you’re applying for. If you have one general version floating around on LinkedIn, a recruiter or hiring manager might overlook what makes you the best fit for a specific opportunity.

LinkedIn is an incredible tool for job seekers, but keeping your resume private allows you to maintain control of your search and put your best foot forward in every opportunity.

Kate E. Williamson wrote a great post on this topic a while back, and I wanted to share my thoughts as well!
